We all spend 1/3rd of our entire life lying down on our beds. We have never given it a thought about it, but this is the truth. We never think of cleaning our mattresses, even when we pull off the bed sheets for cleaning, we never think about cleaning our mattress. It comes with a cover which cannot be removed and so we never bother to clean it. However the mattress can gather a lot of dust, dirt, spills, stains, mites etc. but then we never think of cleaning it. You should know that on an average an individual produces a half a pint of perspiration while sleeping which is again absorbed by the mattress. Therefore it is very important for every household to clean their mattresses.
You can start your cleaning by using a vacuum cleaner and vacuum away the dust and debris accumulated on the mattress. Remember to clean up the upholstery attachment of the vacuum cleaner before using it on your mattress as it has a lot of dust and dirt which can come on to your mattress. In order to deodorise your mattress, you can sprinkle some baking powder on your mattress and wait for 30 minutes. Now clean it up using the upholstery attachment of the vacuum cleaner. The baking soda will eliminate bad odour coming from the mattress as a result of soaking up so much of perspiration and gathering dirt and dust. However it will not help remove any stain or spill marks from your mattress.
Our mattresses usually get protein stains. Protein stains cover blood, sweat, urine, vomit etc. mostly body fluids. The liquid stains can be blotted using clean and wet cloth and then a dry one. You can also create a paste of baking soda, salt and water and rub it on the stain. Keep it for 30 minutes and then brush it off. You can also use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide in two parts with dish soap in one part. Apply it on the stains using a toothbrush and then leave it for 5 minutes. Clean it up with a clean cloth dampened with cold water. Make sure you use very little liquid or water as too much liquid will take a lot of time in drying and you must keep your mattress as dry as you can.
If you are suffering from any allergies or if you have stains which are not getting removed from the mattress, you must call in professional upholstery cleaners who would clean your mattress. They have the required equipment and cleaning products which can remove tough stains easily and clean your mattress completely. They will help you get rid of mites and bugs too. You must follow certain guidelines which will help you prolong the life of your mattress. You can flip your mattress and rotate it with a change of season. Avoid handling water or liquid when on bed as water is not at all good for mattress. It spoils it. You can clean your mattress regularly on your own or with the help of professional upholstery cleaners.
