While my first choice for a cleaning job like this is to hire a professional cleaner, doing a move out cleaning is possible with a good list of objectives.  If you manage to do the cleaning after your belongings have been removed, it’s really not a hard job at all.  You will wish it was always this easy to clean your house!

So first, if all your belongings are not gone, move them to the middle of the room… better yet to the porch or just one room.  This will make your move out cleaning way more manageable.

First: The Walls.

What you will need:

  • Poly filler and scraper
  • Fine grit sand paper
  • Matching paint for the walls
  • A clean brush, roller and tray
  • A drop cloth if it’s a big job
  1. Remove all nails and screws from the walls
  2. Fill each hole, scraping off extra filler.  All of the holes must be done all at once or the filler will dry out.
  3. Once dry, sand each filled spot until smooth and flush with the wall.
  4. Wipe away dust from sanding
  5. Paint over area, this may require several coats.  You may want to hire a professional for this, depending on your painting skill.

Second: Phase One of Move out Clean

What you will need:

  • All-purpose Cleaner
  • Clean cloths
  • Window Cleaner
  • Paper towels
  • Vacuum
  1. Clean windows and window ledges
  2. Wipe walls
  3. Clear cobwebs
  4. Clean baseboards
  5. Wipe switch covers and electrical outlets
  6. Vacuum floors and inside closets

Third (and super important): Kitchen and Bathroom – Deep Move out Cleaning

What you will need:

  • All-purpose Cleaner
  • Clean cloths
  • Window Cleaner
  • Paper towels
  • Vacuum
  • Bleach liquid powder or gel
  1. Vacuum room, inside cupboards, closets and drawers
  2. Wipe outside of all cupboards and doors
  3. Clean mirrors, counters and shelves
  4. Scrub sinks and taps to shine
  5. In bathroom:
    1. Clean toilet inside, outside and behind it
    2. Scrub tub, faucets and showerhead
    3. Clean or remove shower curtain
    4. Remove grate on exhaust fan and clean it
  6. In kitchen:
    1. Clean inside and outside of dishwasher, fridge, stove and any other built in appliances.  Moving appliances that can be moved to get the floors and walls behind them is critical, if this is too much, you may want to hire a professional.
    2. Clean out the exhaust fan if you have one
  7. Wash the floors as you leave each room

Finally: Move out Cleaning Outside

What you will need:

  • Straw broom
  • Rake
  • Lawnmower
  • Yard waste bags
  • Recycling containers
  1. The garage should be tidy with only the items with it that come with the place for yard maintenance and swept
  2. The outside needs to be tidy:
    1. Grass mowed
    2. Garbage and recycling neatly arranged
    3. Sweep porch and walkway

It’s a big list, you can see why I like to opt for professional cleaners for my move out cleaning whenever possible.
